The Seven Stages® of Financial Freedom

Where you sit on the financial spectrum is not simply a function of how much you earn. Research consistently shows that high earners can be financially fragile, and modest earners financially secure — the difference lies in behaviour, belief, and the presence of a clear plan.

The Seven Stages® of Financial Freedom provide a framework for understanding exactly where you are in your financial life — and what is required to move forward. Developed from over two decades of regulated financial planning practice, the stages recognise that financial wellbeing is not linear. People move between stages. Life events, relationships, and economic shocks all shift the picture. What matters is not where you started, but whether you have the awareness and the strategy to progress from where you are now.

The FCA’s Financial Lives 2024 survey found that 49% of UK adults showed one or more characteristics of vulnerability in 2024. Many are not without income. Many are without a clear financial map.

These Seven Stages® are that map.
